Share the positivity
I’ve been fortunate to work with some great leaders over the years, and one thing I’ve carried with me is the impact of positivity when it’s shared openly and consistently.
As a leader, I see creating a positive environment as a responsibility, not a nice-to-have. It builds trust, raises confidence and gives people the space to contribute ideas, take risks and grow. When people feel supported and recognised for what they do well, they’re far more likely to push themselves further and do their best work.
Focusing on strengths doesn’t mean ignoring development. It means helping people build confidence in what they’re already good at, while supporting them to improve in a way that feels constructive and achievable.
And yes, it can feel a bit awkward at first, but recognition matters. A small, genuine piece of positive feedback can go a long way in how someone sees their work and themselves.
If you still need convincing, here are a few favourites I’ve received over the years…
“You are great at leading the team and always notice people's strengths. You are super supportive and encourage me to take bold risks. You are great at bringing the wider team into the creative process in a productive way and are great at articulating the design problem, as well as making decisions. Having you as my line manager has certainly increased my confidence!”
